The new online safety bill, currently being pushed through Parliament by Culture Secretary Nadine Dorris, is set to ensure that social media organisations treat fraud as a \u2018priority harm\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The bill outlines that companies will have to take more steps to prevent criminals from using their platforms for fraud related offences \u2013 as opposed to only responding in a reactive capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition, it is anticipated that a new legal duty will be imposed on the major social media services and search engines to help put a stop to paid-for fraudulent adverts appearing on their platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
James Thompson, Chairman of the City of London Police, said the Online Safety Bill will have a \u201csignificant impact on the growing number of scams targeting people on their mobile phones, computers and other devices\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
