Recently, significant events such as the Covid-19 pandemic and the\u202fcost-of-living\u202fcrisis are being exploited by cyber criminals to snare victims.\u202fNew trends affecting individuals and businesses include email scams, also known as \u2018phishing\u2019 providing\u202ffalse promises of energy and\u202fcouncil\u202ftax rebates or encouraging people to apply for a\u202f\u2018cost of living payment\u2019, mimicking\u202flegitimate government support packages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phishing<\/a>\u202finvolves fraudsters sending emails\u202for text messages\u202fto potential victims that are posed as legitimate requests from genuine organisations,\u202fin order\u202fto extract personal information or money from the victim.\u202fAs a result, victims can find their accessed by an unauthorised third party, confidential data stolen, or bank accounts emptied.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phishing attacks are becoming harder and harder to recognise.\u202fFor businesses,\u202fphishing emails may not be flagged by spam folders and could be picked up by employees who believe\u202fthem\u202fto be genuine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To avoid falling victim to\u202ffraudsters, get in touch with the organisation emailing or texting you to confirm that the message is legitimate\u202fand avoid clicking on suspicious links, or opening attachments.\u202fClicking on links or opening attachments could download malware onto your computer or\u202fbe a fake page that encourages you to enter personal details and financial information. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
